Learn More About Grgich Hills Estate

Grgich Hills Estate is a benchmark Napa Valley wine estate, consistently producing wines of the highest quality.

Vintner Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko “Mike” Grgich was born in Croatia, and studied winemaking and viticulture at the University of Zagreb before he left to escape communism. He arrived in Napa Valley in August 1958. Mike learned from some of the legends of Napa Valley: Lee Stewart, of Souverain Cellars; Brother Timothy at Christian Brothers; André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyards; joining Robert Mondavi at his new winery, and then becoming winemaker at Chateau Montelena, where the Chardonnay he crafted won the famed 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France and revolutionizing the wine world. This historic tasting energized New World winemakers. The world-wide recognition also allowed Mike to open his own winery, partnering with Austin Hills, of the Hills Bros. Coffee Company. On Independence Day, July 4th, 1977, Mike and Austin broke ground in Rutherford to build Grgich Hills Cellar.

Today, the winery remains family owned and operated with Mike assisted by his daughter, Violet Grgich, who is Vice President of Operations, and his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, who is Vice President of Vineyards and Production.

Committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability, we farm five estate vineyards without artificial pesticides or herbicides, rely on wild yeast fermentation and use our passion and art to handcraft food-friendly, balanced and elegant wines.
