Founded in 1971, and celebrating its 46th Anniversary this year, a visit to Smith-Madrone on Spring Mountain is a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle that occurs on the Napa Valley Floor.
The Spring Mountain District is one of the five great mountain
appellations of the Napa Valley. It covers a lot of ground – its lower reaches
abut the quiet residential streets of St Helena town, before the road climbs in
vertiginous switchbacks up to 2,265 feet into the Mayacamas Range and borders of
Sonoma. Wine has been made in the district since the mid-19th century – the Beringers,
already established in St. Helena, planted a vineyard in 1880. In its heyday,
before phylloxera and Prohibition, there were some 250 wineries working on
Spring Mountain. Today there are only 30, and you’re unlikely to find a more
diverse crew of winemakers and grape farmers in Napa, or indeed any American
Smith-Madrone believes in the premise that great wine can only be made from grapes of superb quality. Grapes of this quality are the result of the right site, soil and weather, along with proper management.
Since the first vintage in 1977, wine making practices have been a blend of the traditional methods of France and Germany coupled with new techniques developed in California. Such processes as barrel fermentation, sur lie aging and open top fermentation require substantial amounts of hand labor, but are essential to the production of wine of great quality. Less than 4,000 cases of wine are released each year, similar to Europe's small estate wineries.
At Smith-Madrone our goal is to make artisanal wines which are distinctive and are an expression of both the vintage and us, as vintners, but above all else, are wines which brings pleasure to the senses. Every year our wine is made from the same vineyards, pruned by the same people in the same way, cultivated in exactly the same manner, and harvested at similar levels of maturity. Yet, Mother Nature stamps each vintage with a unique set of flavors, senses and character. Vintage dating is a celebration of that uniqueness and diversity.
The name Smith-Madrone is a tribute to the Smith Smith brothers and the predominant tree on the ranch. The Madrone is an evergreen with a red-brown trunk and branches. In the spring the tree bears lily-of-the-valley like flower clusters; in the fall orange-red berries appear.

All of our wines are made entirely from the winery's estate vineyards surrounding the winery on top of Spring Mountain. Stuart Smith chose specific slopes with different exposures for targeted varietals when planting the vineyards: eastern exposure for Riesling, southern and western exposures across flat stretches for Cabernet Sauvignon, and the coolest northern facing slopes for the Chardonnay. There are numerous historical sites on the ranch, as well as a breathtaking array of natural beauty and wildlife.
The 200 acre ranch was planted as a vineyard in the 1880's and was the home to California black bears and abundant wildlife. The enormous 130 year old Picholine olive trees frame a path and view overlooking Napa Valley.
