von Strasser Family of Wines

Calistoga / United States

Details

Located off the beaten path on Diamond Mountain, the winery is a barn that was built in the late 1880s. It has been remodeled into a modern winemaking facility while retaining its working-ranch charm.

To take full advantage of the hillside location and to better control the variables of winemaking, the von Strassers added caves to their property in 2000, which are included in the winery tours. Often they are led by the owner Rudy von Strasser, who is also the winemaker.

Known for their big Cabs, von Strasser offers single-vineyard bottlings, rare in the marketplace. They are also the only winery in the Napa Valley producing a Gruner Veltliner, which is a white wine made almost exclusively in Austria and the Czech Republic, known affectionately as Gru-Vee.

The tasting room is charming and unpretentious. Even better are the outdoor areas: amazing views, well-maintained vineyards which blend perfectly into the countryside. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual with one exception: the staff is very serious about the wine.

The Cartel Wine club offers members a discount on von Strasser wine club shipments, complimentary tours and tasting for you and up to three guests, invitations to members-only events and access to a private picnic area.
