Steltzner Vineyards is most well known for its Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Additionally we produce Merlot, Claret, Sangiovese Riserva, Pinotage, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and a Merlot Port. The wines are wonderfully balanced, have focused fruit and are marked by their distinctive terroir. Steltzner wines are crafted to pair with food, and are great to drink with family and friends—just as the Steltzner family does. After graduating from Sacramento State with a Master’s Degree in Art, Dick moved to St. Helena to pursue his artistic passion. After embarking on a brief career as a potter and glass blower, he decided to follow his family legacy and became a farmer. His main interest was in the then-speculative grape growing business. In 1965, Dick purchased land in the Stags Leap District and began planting vineyards, only to sell the fruit, he was not yet interested in making his own wine. In 1977, with some excess unsold grapes, Dick and his wife Christine produced the first 500 cases of Steltzner Vineyards wines. The wine was originally intended to be for his personal use, but when he realized how much wine he had, Dick released the winery’s first commercial wines in 1980. Reinventing himself again, this time as a farmer and a winemaker. Today Dick is joined by his daughter and son, Allison and Justin. Allison manages winery operations and national sales, while Justin manages the vineyards. Together, they hope to continue the excellent quality of Steltzner wines.

Steltzner Vineyards began as a vineyard management company with land initially purchased in 1964 and 1965. Dick Steltzner developed some well-known vineyards in the Diamond Mountain, Spring Mountain and Stags Leap districts. After selling off high quality fruit to other wineries Steltzner decided to make his own wine, releasing his first commercial vintage in 1977. The winery is located on the East side of Silverado Trail just across from Pine Ridge Winery. Steltzner has a fairly sizeable cave system with 18,000 square feet of tunnels bored through the hillside. 80 acres are on the property, 64 of which are producing grapes and all fruit for the Steltzner label comes from the estate.More from the Napa Wine Project
