Owner and winemaker Gerhard Reisacher is an eighth-generation winemaker who grew up in a small wine village south of Vienna. His wine making philosophy is to produce distinctive red wines that are big and bold without being overpowering. Each wine expresses a sense of place or terroir from carefully selected single-vineyard sources. What is most unusual about Delectus is that the winery is in a corporate business park on the south side of Napa. When you drive up, you may think, “I must be lost,” but walk in the door and immediately you know you're in a small, family-owned, working winery. Like all good wineries, there are winery dogs, and visitors can participate in a detailed and educational tasting from barrels and current releases, during a stroll through the winery. The tasting room itself is small but beautifully appointed with dark woods and gleaming fixtures. The tour sizes are kept small on purpose, so visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the winery team and have all their questions addressed. Late in 2004, Delectus purchased a 112-acre parcel of historic land bordering Mount St. Helena and overlooking the Knights Valley with ranges in altitude from 1,200-2,200 feet. Soon 40 acres of the property will be planted with the five red Bordeaux varietals and Petite Sirah. Visitors who join their wine club, Club Delectus, get discounts on wine, free tours and wine tastings, and invitations to events held at the mountain vineyards and winery.

Delectus Winery is located just south of Napa; it is one of only a handful of wineries south of Napa that we are aware of located in an Industrial/Business park. From the outside, this is one of the most "humble looking wineries we have visited. When you pull into the parking lot there is no sign and you are surrounded by metal framed industrial buildings; we were told that some people assume they are lost and end up calling the winery even though they are parked right in front of the winery building! Once you step inside however, you are treated to a beautiful tasting room complete with many of the original wine labels hanging on the walls. More from the Napa Wine Project
