Centrally located between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California's Central Coast, this fast-growing wine region is a 24 square mile territory, home to nearly 200 wineries. Bisecting the region is Highway 46, along which many wineries are located. To the east of the region is Templeton Gap, through which cool evening breezes off the Pacific cool the vines after a long, hot summer day.
The downtown area is a picturesque step back in time with restored turn-of-the-century architecture and cozy storefronts. Many wineries have their tasting rooms located in the downtown area which makes it really easy to taste a wide variety of wines without a lot of driving.
With a greater day-to-night temperature swing than any other appellation in California, distinct microclimates, diverse soils and a long growing season, Paso Robles is a unique wine region blessed with optimal growing conditions for producing premium and ultra premium wines. More than 40 wine grape varieties are grown in Paso Robles: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne and Zinfandel.
Even though Paso Robles wineries have won many prestigious, international awards, the region has a homey and relaxed atmosphere. The Paso Robles Wine Festival has been taking place every year in May since 1982. Music, art, wine and other local attractions make it worth the trip.
