Wine Tasting in Livermore

Livermore Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in California, and is located approximately 40 miles east of San Francisco. There are approximately 50 wineries located in the Pleasanton, Castro Valley and Livermore area: most are small, boutique producers open by appointment only.

Concannon Winery, one of the largest in the region, is the “birthplace of the Petite Syrah.” At the far end of the valley is Wente, known for sparkling wines and summer concerts. Livermore winegrowers experiment with a wide array of varietals. The long, hot, dry growing season makes for intense and complex flavors.

Livermore’s downtown area has benefitted from a restoration that includes lots of great little restaurants, interesting boutiques and shops, and of course, wine tasting salons. Nearby, visitors can cool their heels at Del Valle reservoir on the lake’s beaches or in a rented kayak. Horseback riding and cycling are also popular local pastimes.

The close proximity to San Francisco makes it a great day-trip, or weekend get-away destination. The proximity to public transportation and plethora of bike trails make for the perfect regional trip for travelers seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.
