Chocolate & Wine Pairings

While there are two schools of thought about whether chocolate and wine go together, fortunately there's room for all, and wineries that provide tasting experiences for chocolate lovers. A good rule of thumb is that the wine needs to be at least as sweet, if not a sweeter, than the chocolate pairing. It's good to match lighter, more delicate flavored chocolates with champagne or white wines and red wines with stronger flavored chocolates.

Chocolate is a lot like wine in that when you're tasting it, you want to start light and end dark. Some basic guidelines about the best pairings:

  • White Chocolate - Zinfandel, Sherry or Muscat.
  • Milk Chocolate - Pinot Noir, a lighter-bodied Merlot, Port, Riesling, or Champagne.
  • Dark Chocolate - Cabernet, Zinfandel, Merlot or Port.
